If your project is being mixed in the computer (or otherwise for that matter) make sure that proper gain staging has been employed Before and After the master fader. If your mixes look like the waveforms are clipped off at the top and bottom they are distorted.

The mixes will always sound better if they are not using up all available headroom in the digital domain (they can Peak at -6 and be great). Note that clipping plugins can be worse sounding than clipping the mix bus.
